New NHS MenB vaccine for eligible young people

Following recent outbreaks and clusters of Meningococcal B, also known as MenB, among teenagers and young adults, the NHS has introduced a new, time-limited, free vaccination offer for eligible young people.

MenB bacteria can cause meningitis, an infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord, and septicaemia, sometimes called blood poisoning. These illnesses are uncommon but can develop very quickly and may cause serious, life-changing complications.

Why are some young people at greater risk?

MenB bacteria can spread through close and prolonged contact, including kissing, sharing drinks or vapes, or spending a lot of time with someone carrying the bacteria.

The risk can be higher when young people start university or move into shared accommodation, as they are living, studying and socialising with many new people.

Who is eligible?

You may be eligible if you:

  • are in the Year 13 age group and were born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008
  • are starting university as an undergraduate for the first time in autumn 2026 and were born on or after 21 July 2001
  • are moving into further education accommodation or halls for the first time in autumn 2026 and were born on or after 21 July 2001.

From 20 July 2026, eligible young people can receive the vaccine free of charge through participating community pharmacies.

Two doses are needed, at least four weeks apart, so eligible young people should arrange their first dose as soon as possible to allow time to complete the course before the autumn.

The MenB vaccine is different from the routine MenACWY vaccine offered through schools. The two vaccines protect against different groups of meningococcal bacteria, so eligible young people should still take up the MenB offer even if they have already received the MenACWY vaccine.
