Lambeth residents to get easier access to HIV prevention medication with digital PrEP Service

Lambeth residents can now get easier access to HIV prevention medication, with a new digital service comissioned by Lambeth Council. Pre exposure prohylaxis, or PrEP, is an HIV prevention medication in pill form. When taken correctly, PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV from sex by 99 percent.

Lambeth has the highest diagnosed prevalence of HIV in the country. Delivered by Preventx, the UK’s largest provider of remote sexual health testing, this new service increases the availability of PrEP for Lambeth residents, and supports the aim to achieve zero new HIV cases in London by 2030.

The London London HIV Prevention Programme is hosted by Lambeth Council. Their recent report Towards Equity: Reimaginging HIV Prevention for London’s Black Communities focuses on access to HIV prevention options for London’s Black heritage communities, and cites the importance of expanding access to digital prevention options which provide flexibility and confidentiality, which were both recognised as barriers to access.

Dr Ruth Harris, HIV GP Champion for Lambeth said: “PrEP is a vital way to stop new HIV infections in our borough. Making it available to order online means more Lambeth residents can take control of their sexual health and have medication that will protect them from HIV. Getting free, safe and confidential PrEP online will remove barriers to access and help ensure that everyone who wishes to take it and who needs it can.”
