Age UK Lambeth’s Festive Friends: no one should spend Christmas alone
Christmas is often called “the most wonderful time of the year,” but for many older people, it can be the loneliest. Age UK research shows that 1.5 million older people in the UK are expected to eat Christmas dinner alone, and 670,000 won’t see or speak to anyone at all on Christmas Day. Loneliness isn’t just sad – it’s harmful. It increases the risk of depression and even physical health problems, and winter makes things worse: shorter days, colder weather, and closed services make it harder to stay connected.
That’s why Age UK Lambeth’s Festive Friends project is so important. It matches volunteers with isolated residents to deliver an extra portion of a home-cooked Christmas meal – a simple act that brings warmth, conversation, and a sense of belonging.
