Marking Carers’ Rights Day in Lambeth

Today, on Carers’ Rights Day, we seek to raise awareness of the entitlements and support available for unpaid carers in Lambeth, and make sure that more local carers know how to access their rights and get the support they need.

In the recent Lambeth Council consultation on the Carers Strategy, Lambeth carers were asked what local changes would make a difference to them. 72 per cent of carers said they wanted Lambeth to ¨make sure carers know about their rights, what they are entitled to and support available¨ – the top ranked answer. Carers’ Rights Day offers the chance to put this into action.

Information Guide and Top Tips: supporting carers to know their rights

Local charity Carers’ Hub Lambeth has produced a helpful information guide with ‘top tips’ for carers. The guide includes information on getting a Carers’ Assessment, finding out about Carers’ Allowance, registering as a carer with your GP, and getting support on offer from Carers’ Hub Lambeth and other local organisations.

Unpaid carers’ rights to free Covid 19 and Flu Vaccines

An important right for unpaid carers is their eligibility for seasonal Flu and Covid 19 vaccinations. For most people, flu is unpleasant, but for some it can be dangerous and even life-threatening. It is different from a common cold. COVID-19 is also still making people very ill every day. Both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective and are the best protection from these viruses.

If you had the flu vaccination last year, you need another one this year to give protection against the strains of flu that are most likely to be going around this year. Your immunity from the COVID-19 vaccine also reduces over time. Therefore, those at greater risk from infection and passing it on to other more vulnerable people are being invited to get a booster – this includes carers.
