About the Sexual Health Programme

In Lambeth, we are committed to increasing access to and awareness of sexual health services and educating people about their choices.

Our work brings together Lambeth Together health and care partner organisations to make sure people have healthy and fulfilling sexual relationships and good sexual and reproductive health. In this section you will find information about our sexual health services, including contraception, abortion and HIV prevention and support.

There has been much progress over the last few years. New HIV diagnoses have significantly reduced in Lambeth, as have some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as genital warts, thanks to the introduction of interventions like HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and HPV vaccination. However, some challenges remain. Our rates of new sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are the highest in England, and there are persistent inequalities in sexual and reproductive health, with young people, gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), and Black heritage and other ethnic communities experiencing poorer outcomes.

Collaborative Action

Recognising the shared needs and health inequalities of our communities, we work in close collaboration with other South East London boroughs – Southwark, Lewisham, Bexley and Bromley – and alongside partners across the NHS, community and voluntary organisations, and residents. Together, we design and deliver responsive sexual health services tailored to local needs.

Our aims

By prioritising prevention, education, and equitable access, our refreshed Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Bexley and Bromley (LSLBB) strategy strives to create a borough where sexual and reproductive health inequalities are significantly reduced, and residents of all ages can thrive. Through our services, we want:

  • people to be empowered to build healthy, respectful, and fulfilling sexual relationships
  • people to effectively manage their fertility and reproductive health, with clear understanding and access to contraception choices
  • to reduce the number of cases of sexually transmitted infections, in particular among people from populations who are disproportionately affected
  • to move closer to our aim of achieving zero HIV-related stigma, zero HIV transmissions and zero HIV-related deaths, whilst improving the care and support of people living with HIV in our borough.
